About the Amgen Tour of California

In its fifth year of running, the AMGEN Tour of California is already considered cycling’s most important and successful road race in the United States. This year’s course promises to be spectacular, with the race moving to May to take full advantage of California’s spectacular weather and stunning scenery. The official stage start and finish cities for the May 16-23, 2010 race include: Nevada City to Sacramento, Davis to Santa Rosa, San Francisco to Santa Cruz, San Jose to Modesto, Visalia to Bakersfield, Pasadena to Big Bear Lake, Los Angeles (Time Trials), and Thousand Oaks/Westlake Village/Agoura Hills.

Stage Two of the race will start in Davis and end in Santa Rosa on Monday, May 17. Davis is recognized with a Platinum designation as one of the country’s most Bicycle Friendly Cities by the League of American Bicyclists, with an extensive network of bike paths and lanes throughout the community. “It truly is an honor for the city of Davis, also known as Bike City USA, to be chosen as a host city for the 2010 Amgen Tour of California,” said Mayor Ruth Asmundson. “Amgen Tour of California definitely noticed the tremendous turnout on the streets of Davis last year, despite the rain.”

The Amgen Tour of California is the largest cycling event in America. It features many of the world’s top professional cycling teams. Seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong also announced his intent to compete in the fifth-annual race along with three-time defending champion Levi Leipheimer and the 2009 second place finisher David Zabriskie. Each year the race has generated $100 million in economic growth.
